Tinubu reaffirms commitment to LG autonomy
The Federal Government on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local government administration and ensuring full autonomy for the 774 councils across the country.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, stated this in Gombe while delivering a keynote address at the Gombe State Local Government Summit.
Akume, represented by Mr Nadungu Gagare, Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs, Office of the Secretary of the Federation, said local government remained crucial to grass- roots development.
He stated that local government was key to national development due to its proximity to the people.
According to him, for the country to develop effectively and inclusively, local government must function in line with the constitution as the third tier of government.
He noted that due to its importance in national development, the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, is committed to granting local governments’ full autonomy.
He said autonomous local councils would strengthen grassroots governance and improve service delivery to the people.
The SGF stated that the Tinubu-led administration was working with key stakeholders to ensure local governments function effectively without state government interference.
Earlier, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State praised President Tinubu’s commitment to local government autonomy, federalism, and support for states. Yahaya said his administration supports local government autonomy.
However, he noted that for autonomy to be beneficial, local governments must have the capacity, financial discipline, and accountability to utilise their resources effectively.
The governor said the summit was organised to equip local government executives with the knowledge and expertise needed to succeed in their responsibilities.
“At the conclusion of this summit, all participants will sign a declaration pledging commitment to good governance, transparency, accountability, and service to the people.
