The Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Engineer Dr. Abdul Jimoh Muhammed has lauded the OPay Digital Services for innovative scholarship initiative aimed at alleviating financial barriers for students pursuing higher education.
Muhammed gave the commendations when the representatives of Opay paid an official visit to the institution to give a detailed explanation on the pro- posed partnership with the institution.
He highlighted the importance of such initiatives towards promoting access to education, noting that including the institution in their scope of coverage as a beneficiary among the ten selected institutions in Nigeria is highly commendable.
The Rector urged Opay to expand its philanthropic efforts beyond scholarships to include in- frastructure improvements such as building hostels, classrooms, and ICT facilities which he said would significantly benefit the students and the communities towards creating a more conducive learning environment.
He further called for collaboration with Opay in agricultural initiatives which would complement the Polytechnic’s efforts in enhancing food sufficiency within the state and exposed students to the practical aspect of their course of study.
Earlier, the representative of Opay Digital Services, Mr. Itoro Udo said that the primary aim of the initiative is to promote career development, foster inclusiveness, and provide financial support to deserving students.
Udo added that the scholar- ship is opened to all undergraduate students of the State Polytechnic who maintain an active Opay account, adding that each beneficiary of the scholarship would receive N300,000 per academic session.
According to him, at least 20 students would be sponsored annually for the next 10 years, demonstrating OPay’s commitment to education and youth empowerment and appealed for cooperation from the management of the institution for the success of the programme.
