Nigerian president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the occasion of the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, has extended a message of hope to Nigerians urging them to give him another four years to fix the country’s teething problems.

The president, while acknowledging that millions of Nigerians still struggle to afford food and medical bills, he categorically stated that he cannot fix generations of problems in only four years.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu acknowledged that millions of Nigerians are still struggling to afford food, pay school fees, settle medical bills, and cover transportation costs, and these give him great concerns.

In his Independence Day address, Tinubu said his administration cannot erase in four years, problems that accumulated over generations, but insisted that his government can change the country’s direction and build an economy that steadily lifts people out of poverty.

President Tinubu, however, promised to lower the cost of living, create more jobs, and renew the push to tackle poverty as he prepares to seek a second term in office in the upcoming January elections.

Tinubu defended the sweeping economic reforms he introduced since taking office in 2023, including the removal of fuel subsidies, currency reforms, and tax changes.

He argued that the measures were necessary to fix deep-rooted problems in the economy. “The reforms did not create the weaknesses in our economy. They confronted them,” Tinubu said, adding that his next priority is “shared and widespread prosperity.” But despite improvements in some economic indicators, many Nigerians continue to face high living costs and economic hardship.

Meanwhile, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), millions of Nigerians remain in poverty, while food insecurity continues to affect large parts of the country.
