The reinforcements, according to the statement, are in addition to personnel already mobilised from other security agencies operating within the state.
The Enugu State Police Command has announced a total restriction of human and vehicular movement across the six local government areas that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District ahead of Saturday’s bye-election, as security agencies intensify preparations to prevent electoral violence and malpractice.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed that movement would be restricted from 12am to 6pm on June 20, 2026, in Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo-Uwani Local Government Areas where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will conduct the senatorial bye-election.
According to the police, the restriction will not apply to electoral officials and persons engaged in verified essential duties. The command said the measure was aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly and credible electoral process in the senatorial district.
The police further revealed that additional security personnel had been deployed to Enugu State on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to bolster security arrangements before, during and after the election.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the command said officers were drawn from Zone 13 Headquarters, Anambra State Police Command, Police College Oji River and Police Detective College Enugu.
The reinforcements, according to the statement, are in addition to personnel already mobilised from other security agencies operating within the state.
“The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has assured adequate security for the Enugu North Senatorial Bye-Election scheduled to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday, June 20, 2026,” the statement read.
“To ensure a peaceful, orderly, and credible electoral process, human and vehicular movements will be restricted from 12am to 6pm on election day in the six Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu, and Uzo-Uwani that make up the Senatorial Zone. The restriction excludes electoral officials and persons on verifiable essential duties.”
The police commissioner warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against engaging in acts capable of undermining the electoral process.
“He warns that thuggery, ballot-box snatching, vote-buying, violence of any form, and other electoral offences will not be tolerated, stressing that anyone found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law,” the statement added.
CP Giwa also urged residents and eligible voters in the senatorial district to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements, electoral misconduct and other security concerns to the nearest police station.
