- Suggests rotational leadership structure or Council of Equals
Senator Florence ItaGiwa has condemned the move by Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber to imose the Sultan of Sokoto and the Ooni of Ife, traditional rulers of two different cultures, on other diversified cultures across Nigeria, as heads of national traditional council.
The condemnation which was contained in a release titled “NOT IN OUR TIME: OBONG OF CALABAR AND THE ERASURE OF A TREATY-BEARING TRADITIONAL AND NATURAL THRONE” obtained by our correspondent, charged the national assembly not to throw the country into ethnic battles and undue conflicts caused by insensitivity and self-centeredness of some lawmakers who now through any means possible want their ethnic group to dominate other ethnic groups across the country.
She counselled that the Efik kingdom controlled by the Obong of Calabra was independent before the amalgamation of North and South to become Niger, and as such soul not be reduced to a ceremonial king.
The Obong of Calabar, she said, is not a ceremonial monarch, but a Treaty King. Warning that the plan by some groups to dominate other ethnic groups in the country should not be carried too far to avoid unexpected back lashes.
Ita-Giwa maintained that if the National Assembly is sincere, it should propose a rotational leadership structure or a council of equals, maintaining that such a move reflects how best to foster unity. “That is how you reflect the true diversity of Nigeria’s royal heritage”.
