Professors Now Aid Illiterates To Rig Elections,’ –Peter Obi

• Raises Alarm Over Nigeria’s Democracy

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has alleged that Nigeria’s democratic institutions are being systematically weakened ahead of the 2027 general elections, claiming that “professors are aiding illiterates to rig elections,” while judges now endorse electoral mandates “whether stolen or not.”

Obi made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Democracy Dialogue held in Bauchi State, where he expressed concern over what he described as the steady erosion of electoral integrity, judicial independence and the rule of law in Nigeria.

The former Anambra State governor lamented what he said was the growing normalization of electoral malpractice and the complicity of institutions that ought to safeguard democracy.

Obi stated: “I went to the Court of Appeal, five judges I never met gave judgment in my favour. So if you look at that and look at what is happening today in Nigeria, where professors are now aiding illiterates to rig an election, where our lawmakers have removed forgery as an offence in electoral matters, our Senior Advocates of Nigeria are defending forgery, our religious leaders are praying for criminal politicians and blessing them, we have a crisis.”
