Lagos Court sentences man to 14 Years for Attempted Sexual Assault of Teenage Girl

A Lagos State resident, Nnanna Daniel, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempting to sexually assault a 13-year-old girl.

The sentencing took place at the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, where Daniel was convicted after pleading guilty to an amended charge of attempting to commit sexual assault by penetration.

The defendant was initially arraigned on July 27, 2021, on a charge of defilement but pleaded not guilty.

However, during proceedings on April 15, 2025, the prosecutor, I.D. Solarin, informed the court that Daniel, through his counsel S.N. Nwogu, had entered a plea and sentence agreement, leading to the amendment of the charge.

Daniel then pleaded guilty to the new charge. “Sexual offences against children represent a grave violation of trust and cause profound harm to victims, their families, and the wider community,” Justice Rahman Oshodi stated.

“The prosecutrix in this case was a child of merely 13 years at the time of this incident – a young person entitled to protection, not exploitation.”

Justice Oshodi further explained, “Having considered all relevant factors, I hereby sentence you to 14 years imprisonment, with the sentence deemed to have commenced from the date of your remand on May 18, 2018.”

Under the terms of the Plea Bargain, Daniel’s family will be required to ensure his rehabilitation upon release, and he is prohibited from having any direct or indirect contact with the victim or her family.

Daniel’s actions contravened Sections 33 and 38 of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law of Lagos State, 2021.
