- Didn’t Go Beyond Airport,’
- Condemns Transporting Of Grieving Citizens
Nigerian former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his recent visit to Plateau State, describing it as a troubling display of detachment from the plight of Nigerians facing violent attacks.
In a statement issued on Thursday, signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, he expressed outrage that days after the killing of innocent citizens in parts of the state, the President’s “on-the-spot assessment” did not extend beyond the airport.
According to him, Tinubu failed to visit affected communities or engage directly with grieving families, instead making what he characterised as a brief and symbolic stop before departing.
‘It is both shocking and deeply insensitive that several days after the gruesome killings of innocent citizens, the President’s so-called ‘on-the-spot assessment’ was reduced to a brief stop at the foot of his aircraft, never extending beyond the airport, never reaching the grieving communities, and never touching the pain of the victims.
“Even more troubling is the impression that this fleeting visit was hurriedly curtailed to allow the President proceed to Lagos for the Easter holidays, a decision that reflects a deeply troubling prioritisation in the face of national grief,” Atiku said, adding that the trip appeared hastily arranged and prematurely ended.
The former Vice President also criticised what he called the politicisation of the visit, claiming that Tinubu met with party loyalists in Jos under the guise of official engagements, rather than focusing on victims of the violence.
Atiku drew parallels with a similar incident in Benue State in June 2025, where he alleged that Tinubu avoided visiting Yelwata, the epicentre of a deadly attack, and instead attended what he described as a political gathering.
