D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, have been handsomely rewarded by the Federal Government following their remarkable feat of winning a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title.
At a special reception held in their honour at the State House on Monday evening, each player of the triumphant squad was awarded $100,000, a national honour OON, and a plot of land each.
The coaching and technical crew members were also not left out, receiving $50,000 each, the national honour and a plot of land.
Though President Bola Tinubu was not present at the event, he was ably represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government.
The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was also in attendance, along with some ministers and other dignitaries.
The event marked a moment of national celebration, as top government officials, sports administrators, and well-wishers gathered to honour the D’Tigress for their extraordinary achievement.
The Rena Wakama-led team etched their names further into the annals of African basketball history on Sunday night, when they defeated Mali 78–64 in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
It was their fifth consecutive title, and seventh overall, extending a stunning 29-game unbeaten streak that dates back to 2015.
This generous recognition mirrors similar gestures earlier this year, when President Tinubu hosted the Super Falcons following their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, awarding them national honours, cash gifts, and homes.
