Obi engages top UK figures in push for Nigeria’s economic revival

The presidential aspirant on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Gregory Obi has disclosed that he held meetings in London with key stakeholders in British politics and the business community, including Lord Jonathan Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC).

In a post on his X handle, Mr Obi said the discussion with Lord Marland centred on prospective trade opportunities, economic advancement, and the promotion of small businesses across Nigeria.

“It is clear that fostering a robust economy and generating employment, as evidenced by rapidly growing nations like China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, necessitates a concerted effort to prioritise support for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises,” he wrote.

Mr Obi reiterated his long-held view that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are the driving force behind economic growth, and argued that vigorous support for such businesses is imperative for enhancing development and creating significant employment opportunities, particularly in agriculture and manufacturing.

“A new and revitalised Nigeria is possible,” he added.
