- As Mass Abductions Persist
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has stated that Christians are being victimized in parts of northern Nigeria, warning that religious imbalance and insecurity are deepening divisions in the country.
Dogara made the remarks during a televised interview on January 25, 2026, while speaking on national debates around religious representation in politics, power-sharing, and fairness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He noted that while some North-Central states such as Plateau, Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa have made progress in managing religious coexistence, other northern states continue to experience troubling patterns of discrimination and insecurity against Christians.
His comments come amid ongoing violence across northern Nigeria, including bandit attacks, kidnappings, and assaults on religious communities, which have disproportionately affected Christian populations in several areas.
In recent weeks, reports of mass abductions of worshippers from churches, particularly in Kaduna State, have intensified public concern over the safety of Christian communities.
Dogara emphasized that the issue is not uniform across the region but warned that ignoring pockets of victimization risks fuelling resentment and instability.
He called for fairness, inclusion, and deliberate efforts to protect all citizens regardless of faith.
