Atiku blasts Presidency for ‘dragging Judiciary into partisan gutters’

  • with Tinubu’s Campaign Anthem at Judges’ Conference

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has slammed the playing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign anthem, “On Your Mandate”, at the 2025 All Nigerian Judges Conference, calling it an “assault on national dignity” and a “desecration of protocol, ethics, and national pride.”

The incident occurred when the Guards Brigade Band played Tinubu’s campaign song instead of the National Anthem at the end of Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun’s speech. Atiku questioned how judges can dispense justice fearlessly when partisan propaganda is inserted into their official gatherings.

Atiku described the incident as “reckless, scandalous, disgraceful, and deeply irresponsible,” warning it signals an attempt to drag the judiciary into partisan politics. The National Judicial Institute (NJI) denied the judges sang the song, stating it was played by the Guards Brigade Band as part of ceremonial protocol. The incident has sparked concerns about the independence and integrity of the Nigerian judiciary.

President Tinubu had earlier lectured the judiciary on integrity and the rule of law, stressing that “confidence is the lifeblood of justice.” The incident raises questions about the separation of powers and the erosion of democratic values in Nigeria.

The controversy has sparked a heated debate about the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in Nigeria, with many calling for an explanation from the Presidency and the CJN’s office.

Reactions to the incident have been pouring in, with Atiku Abubakar stating, “This affront must be condemned by all who still believe in constitutional democracy.”

The PDP spokesperson said, “The APC is desperate to capture all institutions to rig the 2027 elections.” Civil society groups have also weighed in, saying, “This is a clear attempt to undermine the judiciary’s independence.”
