- As Nigerians Express Mixed Reactions
BY BONNY AMADI
Even with a reported plan by Nigerian president Bola Ahmed Tinubu to soon meet with the United States President, Donald Trump, in a location yet to be disclosed, apprehension still grips Nigerians.
Nigerians have continued to express mixed feelings over the reported plan by the US president to intervene in the security situation in Nigeria, focused at addressing the menace of terrorism and terrorists across the country.
It was reported on Sunday that President Bola Tinubu is ready to meet Donald Trump following the U.S. president’s claims of Christian persecution in Nigeria.
The Nigerian presidency gave details of what will be discussed during the bilateral talks and the possible location.
Opinions have mainly been divided, with one group arguing in favour of US planned intervention and another insisting on questioning the US motive and its long-term implications for the country’s sovereignty, security, and regional stability.
The US president, Donald Trump, On Saturday, threatened military action against Nigeria, a day after alleging that the federal government was supporting genocide against Christians in the country.
Mr Trump designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), suspended arms sales and technical support for the country.
The US president, in a post on Truth Social, said that Christianity was an existential threat in Nigeria as radical Islamic groups were killing thousands of Christians.
24 hours, and counting, Nigerians have been engrossed in a heated debate on the implications of a US-threatened military incursion into Nigeria.
Many Nigerians have expressed mixed feelings over the U.S stand on Nigeria. While some expressed the readiness of Nigeria to confront the US army, should they dare to wage war against Nigeria.
These schools of thought are against a US military invasion. They have described it as a move that could plunge the country into a worse crisis and lead to the death of more citizens.
Others however expressed the need to end, not only terrorism, but also the threat of the security forces against unarmed citizens, political class governance by impunity and the near absence of independent judiciary, developments that seem to have made elections in the country meaningless, and citizens out of government, powerless and voiceless.
Former Buhari’s Aide, Bashir Ahmad Warns USA, saying, “Nigerians Are Battle Ready To Defend Our Country” he added, “So a U.S. senator is now proudly declaring they will target those who helped implement Sharia law in Nigeria, as if practicing or supporting Sharia is a crime. You are free to oppose Sharia in your own country, but you have no jurisdiction to dictate the laws of ours. We will defend our sovereignty and our right to determine our own legal and affairs”
In a post on HeavyDence blog, it was reported that popular Islamic cleric, Gumi expressed that “Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime Trump,” “There are lots of other options for our economic expansion and military alliance,” Gumi.
Nigerian former aviation minister in a later interview, warned that Nigerians will resist any attempt by the United States to invade the country following a statement by President Donald Trump directing the U.S. Department of War to prepare for possible military action against Nigeria”
Sharing his views on X, a Nigerian user, Inyali Peter, wrote, “Is there a single country the US has invaded that it has not left in ruins? We must be cautious about what we support for the sake of politics. The United States has targeted every revolutionary African leader.”
