A powerful explosion caused by an auto accident on Karu Bridge in Abuja, has reportedly left an unspecified number of people dead.

According to reports, the incident which occurred on Wednesday evening, eyewitnesses said triggered an explosion, which happened after a high-impact collision involving a vehicle suspected to be a truck transporting fuel or a highly flammable substance.

In a video shared by one General Jhamuha, several cars were seen engulfed in flames as some good Samaritans tried to rescue victims from the burning wreckage.

General Jhamuha was heard pleading with people to call the fire service to extinguish the fire.

“People are dying, people are burning! Any one close to Road Safety should call them. They should call the fire service. People are dying, people are burning at Karu Bridge!” he pleaded.

“People should help! Everyone is burning! God, look at human beings burning, and no- body can get close.”

As the fire escalated, bystanders were seen at a distance, unable to approach the explosion due to its intensity.

The tanker was reported to have exploded along the Abuja-Keffi expressway near the Karu Bridge in the federal capital territory (FCT).

It was unclear at the time of this report if there were casualties from the incident, but FCT fire service personnel arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, quoted witnesses as saying many vehicles were burnt in the incident as people scrambled for safety.

“I saw the tanker coming at high speed, swerving dangerously before it crashed. Within seconds, there was an explosion, and fire spread everywhere,” Zagazola Makama quoted a survivor, who managed to escape from a nearby vehicle, as having said.

There has been no official statement from the FCT administration and the fire service about the incident.
